CHROME HOME

Chromebook/iPad Take-Home Policies
and Responsibilities

Clinton City Schools has implemented a Chromebook take-home program so students are able to have access to instructional materials needed for learning both at school and at home. Chromebooks will be issued to all 6th-grade students at the beginning of the school year.  The students will begin to take the Chromebook home nightly at the discretion of their 6th-grade teachers.  Students in grade Kindergarten through 5th grade will use the Chromebooks or iPads in school unless a student is:

  1. receiving home-bound instruction;

  2. quarantined due to a positive COVID-19 test or close contact;

  3. enrolled in the CCS Virtual Learning Program.

Devices will be sent home in the event of a class, school, or district closure due to COVID-19.

The use of district-provided technology requires students to abide by all CCS policies and procedures related to the Responsible Use Procedures for Electronic Resources, local, state, and federal laws. Rules and guidelines are in effect before, during, and after school hours whether on or off the school campus. Students are expected to responsibly use district technology and network resources and to keep their district-issued devices safe, secure, and in good working order.

Caring for the Chromebook

    Protecting the Chromebook:

  • Keep food, drink, or other liquids away from the Chromebook.

  • Never place heavy objects on top of a Chromebook, or lean on the Chromebook. The screen is particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure.

  • Do not pick at the keys on the keyboard.

  • Never lift the Chromebook by the screen.

  • Never close the lid on the Chromebook before checking to make sure there are no pens, pencils, papers, etc. between the screen and keyboard.

  • Leave vents uncovered to prevent overheating. Do not rest the Chromebook on top of a pillow.

  • Insert cords, cables, or removable devices carefully into the ports. The headphone port is vulnerable to breakage.

  • When not in use, close the lid (this saves battery life and protects the screen).

  • Keep away from extreme heat or cold.

  • Do not use or store the Chromebook around small children or pets.

  • Do not leave the Chromebook in a vehicle.

    Storing and Carrying the Chromebook:

  • The protective shell of the Chromebook will only provide basic protection from everyday use. It is not designed to prevent damage from drops or abusive handling.

  • Students are encouraged to carry the Chromebook in a protective sleeve or sturdy backpack with a padded pocket. Although sleeves or cases provide an additional measure to help protect the Chromebook, they are not guaranteed to prevent damage. It remains the responsibility of the student to care for and protect his/her device.

     Cleaning the Chromebook:

  • Clean the screen with a soft dry microfiber cloth when necessary.

  • Use a computer disinfectant wipe to clean other parts of the device including the keyboard. (Never clean an electronic device with water, window cleaners, products that contain ammonia, alcohol, or abrasives.)

    Personalizing the Chromebook:

  • Chromebooks must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, paint, tape or labels that are not the property of Clinton City Schools.

Using the Chromebook

     General Information:

  • Chromebook devices are loaned to students and remain the property of Clinton City Schools. Just like textbooks, team uniforms, and other school property, there is a responsibility to care for and return the property in good condition.

  • All files, including email, stored on a school device or accessed via a Clinton City Schools account are the property of Clinton City Schools and are subject to regular review and monitoring.

  • Each student will be assigned a specific Chromebook with the serial number of the device linked to that student’s name. All Chromebooks will be labeled with a District asset tag.

  • Asset tags or serial number tags may not be removed or modified in any way.

    Web Connection and Filtering:

  • CCS Chromebooks are able to connect to the Internet from wireless networks (Wi-Fi) at home or on public networks.

  • Student devices are subject to the Clinton City Schools Internet filters both on and off the Clinton City Schools network. Web pages viewed on the Chromebook are filtered by Clinton City Schools no matter where the Chromebook is used, including your home.

  • Students will not be able to access anything on the Chromebook at home that they would not also be able to access from a Clinton City Schools classroom.

  • Filtering services provided in our schools in compliance with federal regulations for the protection of students are extended to Chromebooks when they are used away from school.

  • Clinton City Schools uses software from two different companies (ENA and GoGuardian) to reference each web page address against a database of addresses that have been blocked.

    Using at School (6th-grade students):

  • The Chromebook is intended for use at school every day.

  • Students who take their Chromebook home are responsible for charging the Chromebook each night and bringing it back every morning. (The Chromebook has approximately 10 hours of battery life.)

  • If a student leaves their Chromebook at home, the student will have the opportunity to use a “loaner Chromebook” from the classroom teacher for the day.

  • The loaner Chromebook must be returned to the teacher at the end of the day.

  • Repeat violation of these policies will result in parent contact and possible alternate arrangements of Chromebook use.

    Using at Home:

  • Clinton City Schools makes every effort to equip families with the necessary tools and information to ensure safe use of the Chromebook while off-campus.

  • The Chromebook is managed by Clinton City Schools.

  • Parent involvement is key for keeping students safe online.

  • Parents and students understand that only a CCS issued Gmail account (@clintonschools.org) can be used to access the Chromebook.

  • The Chromebook is primarily an Internet device that can only be used to its fullest when connected to a network. Parents will need to add their home network to the device.

  • However, an Internet connection is not required for the tool to be valuable and productive. Some Google and Chrome applications (including Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides) allow for offline access. This allows the student to work offline and sync to the network drive as soon as they have Internet access.

Maintenance and Service

    General Information:

  • Chromebooks are supported by the district Technology Office.

  • Misuse of technology and CCS owned devices may result in confiscation of the device, revoking of technology use, or a more strict use of the device.

  • Students are responsible for maintaining their device in working order. Most damages happen as a result of improper or ‘rough’ handling of a device.

  • Chromebooks or chargers that are broken, fail to work properly, lost, or stolen must be brought to the attention of a classroom teacher or technology department immediately.

  • Unexpected problems do occur with devices that are not the fault of the user (computer crashes, software errors, etc.). The technology department is available to assist students with getting such issues involved.

  • CCS owned Chromebooks should never be taken to an outside computer service for any type of service or repair.

    Reporting Damage:

  • All Chromebook damage must be reported to the classroom teacher or the Technology Department immediately. The student will complete a damage report.

    Lost or Stolen:

  • Parents are responsible for immediately notifying the Technology Department if the computer is lost or stolen while away from school.

  • Clinton City Schools will require that a police report be filed by the School Resource Officer in cases of theft.

If the Chromebook is lost, stolen, or damaged, the parent/guardian will be held responsible for the total cost of replacement or repairs.

    Repairing and Replacing:

  • The student will be issued a loaner Chromebook for use until the device can be returned.

  • Students are responsible for the care of the loaner device.

    Receiving the Chromebook:

  • The Chromebooks will be available for use at the beginning of the school year.

  • Students may begin taking the Chromebook home upon receipt of a signed Responsible Use Policy and the satisfactory completion of our Chromebook Safety and Usage course (students will complete at school)

  • receipt of a signed Responsible Use Policy;

    Returning the Chromebook:

  • Chromebook and chargers will be collected mid-May for end of year processing (6th-grade students) or on the first day students return to school.

  • For those students who qualify to take home the Chromebook following graduation, the student will receive the same Chromebook they used during their 6th-grade year. A student qualifies to take home the device if they have attended any CCS school for grades 4-6 in their entirety. All cafeteria charges or replacement costs for lost/damaged textbooks or library books must be paid before receiving the Chromebook.

  • Students who leave CCS before the end of the year must return the Chromebook and charger to their homeroom teacher. If the Chromebook and/or charger are not returned, the parent/guardian will be responsible for payment in full for the cost of the device.
