Read 20 This Summer

READ 20!!!!

This summer, we are proud to kick off a “Read 20” Program with Clinton City Schools students! We are encouraging all our students to read for at least 20 minutes a day!

How important is daily reading? It is the most important thing we can provide our children. Exposure to reading is important in developing vocabulary for fluency and comprehension. Research proves this to be true. Students who score 90% better than their peers on reading tests, read at least 20 minutes per day, exposing them to over 1.8 million words a year. Students who score at 50th percentile, read on average only 4.6 minutes per day – exposing them to 282,000 words per year. Students in the 10th percentile, read less than 1 minute per day – only exposing them to 8,000 words per year. It would take these students one year to read as many words as what a good reader would read in only 2 days!

MyOn is a new electronic library that ALL CCS students will have access to in order to help accomplish this goal! Students will still have access to Big Universe and READS as well. The universal student log-in can be used to access all three of these databases. Of course, students can read hard copies of books as well!

  • Student prizes will be given! The top reader at each school gets a Kindle HD Fire, other rewards include a Kona Ice Cream Party at Lakefront, and gift cards!
  • Book Talks will be held over the summer for rising 1st -6th grade students
  • MyOn website: www.myon.com
  • Big Universe website: www.biguniverse.com
  • READS: https://reads.overdrive.com
  •  Access all three through student’s universal username and password. If your child has forgotten their access, we will send it home with them in their final report card.
  • All three of these sites can be accessed through your child’s individual ClassLink page, which can be accessed at https://launchpad.classlink.com/clintoncity.
  • The Clinton Public Library is a GREAT place to go and read as well!

More information will be coming home soon regarding Read 20! In the meantime, check out these resources and look for ways to encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes a day! It is a wonderful, FREE gift you can give your child that will have a lifelong impact!
